Counseling

heal and recover

Often, experiences from our past can affect our current relationships, mood, and ability to remain present and enjoy the current moment.

Talk therapy with a trained counselor allows us to process these experiences, gain perspective, and begin to make sense of our responses and behaviors.

If you're experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety or simply feel like you'd like to talk to someone, I'm eager to meet you and begin your healing journey. I see clients in-person in SW Portland and online through a secure telehealth platform.

about Katie

I primarily work with individual adults who have a broad range of desires and hopes for therapy. Often, folks are experiencing depression, anxiety, and/or substance use issues and are looking for relief and understanding.

I practice inclusive and affirming care for the LGBTQIA+ community and have experience working with spiritual abuse and trauma caused by non-affirming environments.

I've wanted to be a counselor for about fifteen years, almost the same amount of time as I've been an instructor at the college level. I love teaching, and I've walked with my students through many life experiences, including deaths, relationships ending, trauma, and neurodivergence.

My experience as a teacher inspired me to want to learn how to help folks on a different level. So, in 2021, I went back to school and earned my M.A. in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology.

Working now as a Professional Counselor Associate, my professional experience so far has focused on childhood trauma, relationship trauma, substance use recovery, spiritual trauma and abuse, and career skills.

My Therapeutic Approach

I work collaboratively with each client to develop the approach that works best for them, drawing primarily from mindfulness tools, depth psychology, and solution focused therapy.

Mindfulness Tools

Drawing on the work of Daniel Siegel and his Interpersonal Neurobiology work, I use mindfulness in my own practice and approach counseling sessions with intentional presence.

I teach mindfulness skills and tools and may incorporate mindfulness meditations into sessions if desired by the client and therapeutically appropriate.

Depth Psychology

My counseling education focused on understanding the primary roots of symptoms, including childhood trauma and patterns of behavior.

Once safety and trust are established in the therapeutic relationship, I enjoy helping clients understand the deeper places of their psyche.

Solution-Focused

Solution-focused therapy is a practical approach to working through "here-and-now" issues. This type of therapy often involves discussing options and considering alternate perspectives.

I enjoy working with clients to identify their  personal values and priorities in situations they are currently experiencing. Clients often find it helpful to talk through pros and cons or "what if?" scenarios in a non-judgemental atmosphere.

I work with a number of insurance plans and accept private pay as well.

Aetna; Regence BlueCross BlueShield; Cigna; Cigna EAP; Kaiser Permanente Northwest; PacificSource; Providence Health Plan; United Healthcare; United Healthcare EAP
